Good evening, Washington families! This is Principal Paul Travers with your weekly message.
A very happy Mother's Day to all of our wonderful Washington mothers! I hope you felt truly appreciated today and throughout the week.
Looking ahead, after-school tutoring continues this Monday and Tuesday. Also, on Monday and Tuesday, our golf pathway students will be heading to Gillespie Park Golf Course.
This Tuesday, get ready for some exciting science! The Greensboro Science Center is taking over Washington for our Science Night. Join us at 5:30 PM for engaging science experiments and dinner.
On Wednesday, we're excited to welcome Dudley High School to Washington for their graduation walks. Additionally, our second graders will be heading out to the Greensboro Grasshoppers game this Thursday for some baseball fun.
We will be conducting bus evacuation drills this Thursday. And finally, Friday marks the first day of our Fun Friday Fiesta! This Friday, students who have shown excellent behavior, completed assignments, and demonstrated good effort throughout the week will enjoy bounce houses and delicious Kona Ice right here on campus as a reward for their hard work.
Your weekly health and wellness tip focuses on the amazing benefits of colorful fruits and vegetables. Talk to your child about how different colors provide different vitamins and minerals that help their bodies grow strong and healthy. Make it a fun mission to "collect all the colors" on their plate!
Here is some important information for those who were not able to attend our recent parent meeting regarding changes to our school. Based on current and projected enrollment and the condition of our building, Washington is being considered to close after the 2025-26 school year. There will be no changes to our building next year, but the following year, students would be redistricted to other area schools, including Bluford, Falkener and Gillespie Park Elementary schools. Feeder schools for middle and high would remain the same.
Consolidating schools helps us cut costs and run more efficiently, which improves the student experience across the district. More information about these plans will be shared at the Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, May 13, which starts at 6 p.m. at 712 N. Eugene Street in Greensboro. The board is expected to vote on the final plans on Tuesday, June 10.
I know this news may be surprising, and I’m happy to answer any questions you may have to the best of my ability. We will be sharing more information throughout the coming year about specific details of the transition process. No matter what school a student attends in GCS, they will continue to receive comprehensive instruction, a supportive, caring environment and access to opportunities that will help them reach their goals in the future.
At Washington, we Honor Community, Show Excellence, Think Critically, and Thrive Through Movement.
