Biology: Honors Bio and Regular Biology
Biology is the scientific study of life. This course is a graduation requirement with an EOC final exam, which cannot be exempt. The EOC is 20% of the final grade for this course. This course combines lecture-based instruction with hands-on labs and experiments to encourage critical thinking, data collection, and scientific inquiry.
Sports Medicine 1: Sports Med 1
This course will consist of issues related to the field of athletic training and sports medicine. During Sports Med 1 students will gain knowledge of basic anatomy (musculoskeletal, neural, and surface), basic rehabilitation techniques, basic first aid/CPR, and taping/bandaging techniques.
The focus of the course will be on two fundamental areas of sports medicine:
1) Organization and administration of an athletic health care system: origins and job duties of all members of the sports medicine team (particularly Athletic Trainers), legal responsibilities of health care providers, fitness training to prevent injuries, and sports nutrition.
2) Techniques for prevention and management of sports-related injuries: selecting and using protective equipment, basic first aid/CPR, bloodborne pathogens and universal precautions, psychology of injury, environmental dangers, bandaging and taping techniques, and rehabilitation basics.
Sports Medicine 2: Sports Med 1 is required for this course. Sports Med 2
This course will focus on Recognition and Management of Specific Injuries and Conditions Related to Sports. The course will center on recognition of anatomy, normal and abnormal function, and common sports injuries to all areas of the body, focusing on commonly injured regions, including the foot, lower leg/ankle, knee, thigh, hip, groin, pelvis, shoulder, elbow, forearm, wrist/hand, spine, thorax, and head.
Students will gain knowledge of normal and abnormal surface anatomy, recognition of specific injuries through special testing, and basic rehabilitation techniques for each region or injured body part. Special topics related to young, old, male, and female athletes will also be discussed.
Sports Medicine Hands-On Experience:
Throughout both parts of Sports Medicine, students will be required to shadow the athletic trainer here at Southern. This will help them gain field experience while also earning Service Learning Hours. The athletic trainer will have students help the trainer prepare for games, gain extra practice with their taping techniques, and learn firsthand what it takes to be an athletic trainer. Students are required to shadow the AT for a minimum of 25 hours* for each part of the class.
*Hours may vary depending on class sizes
