• Health Sciences Strand

    Health Science Education is a broad curriculum with meaningful instruction for and about health care careers. Health Science Education plays a major role in meeting present and predicted needs for health care professionals within a health care delivery system characterized by diversity and changing technologies. Health Science Education is designed to prepare graduates as competitors in the health care industry.  Students can develop and apply leadership, social, civic, and health care skills through Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA), the Career and Technical Student Organization for health science education.

     

     Honors Health Science I

     Health Science I introduces students to the health field and the concepts of personal, family, and community health and disease control.  Additional topics include human behavior, medical terminology, physiology, diseases/disorders diagnoses, treatments, technological innovations, and career opportunities in the health field.

     

    Honors Health Science II

     Health Science II expands their understanding of financing and trends of health care agencies, essentials of wellness, legal and ethical issues, teamwork and effective communication.  This course uses the National Healthcare Foundations Standards of Accountability Criteria.  Students will have the opportunity to earn C.P.R. and First Aid Certification.

     

    Emergency Medical Technician 1 

     This course is aligned to the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services and prepares students for certification as an Emergency Medical Responder.  Topics covered include patient assessment, childbirth emergencies, anatomy and physiology, traumatic emergencies.  Hands on skills and practicals are a key component of this class.  If students successfully pass the course and skills labs with an 80% or higher and meet all attendance requirements – they will be eligible to take their North Carolina EMR Certification test at a licensed testing facility.  The pre-requisite for this course is English 2 and the student must be 17 y/o before end of semester.

     

    Emergency Medical Technician 2

      This course is aligned to the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services and prepares students for certification as an Emergency Medical Responder.  It is the second level of EMT and bridges the student from an Emergency Medical Responder level to an Emergency Medical Technician.  Topics included are pharmacology and drug administration, vehicle extrication, psychological emergencies, toxicological emergencies, command operations and multiple patient incident operations.  If students successfully pass the course and skills labs with an 80% or higher, meet all attendance requirements, and meet 48 hours of clinical ride time with Guilford County EMS – they will be eligible to take their North Carolina EMT Certification test at a licensed testing facility.

    The pre-requisites for this course are EMT I, English 3 and the student must be 17 y/o before end of semester.

     

     

     Nursing Fundamentals

     Nursing Fundamentals is designed to prepare potential health care workers to become effective and efficient multi-skilled health team members.  Emphasis is placed on the development of proficiency in employability, emergency care, safety, clerical, and health care skills.  Students are taught nursing skills necessary to become a Certified Nursing Assistant I.      Sports Medicine I 

    Sports Medicine I is designed to provide a detailed study of modern athletic training. Special emphasis is placed on human anatomical and physiological systems of the body.

     

    Sports Medicine II

    Sports Medicine II is designed for students who have an interest in Allied Health Career fields, such as, Athletic Training, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, or related fields. This course is also designed for students who would like to study advanced fields of medicine related to orthopedics. Special emphasis is placed on the application of principles learned in Sports Medicine I.
