Marshall Matson

Marshall Matson is the school support officer for the ten middle and high schools in Learning Area Nine. 


Matson previously served as Director of Blended Learning for Guilford County Schools. He has been a principal in Guilford County for ten years, leading both Mendenhall Middle and Peeler Open Elementary School. During this time, schools under his leadership were among the Most Improved schools in Guilford County on three different occasions, and met or exceeded growth every year. 


Prior to joining GCS, Matson was the Program Director at the North Carolina New Schools Project, and principal of Edgecombe Early College High School. He began his career in education teaching middle school English and social studies in eastern North Carolina with Teach for America.


During his educational tenure, Matson was honored as a state finalist Teacher of the Year, selected as a NC Principal Fellow, presented the North Carolina Order of the Long Leaf Pine and named a GCS finalist Principal of the Year.  Matson holds degrees from East Carolina University and the University of Georgia.
