Tiaira Moragne Named GCS Volunteer of the Month for March 2019
Hairston Middle students receive academic and moral support from UNCG students

Tiaira Moragne Greensboro, N.C. – As a recent University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) graduate, Tiaira Moragne values the support of family, teachers and community members who have a positive influence on our youth. In 2016, she began volunteering at Hairston Middle as a mentor. With the help of another UNCG alumnus, Tiaira oversees the Raise ‘Em Up Mentoring Program and works with students in all grade levels. The program offers group mentoring, character-building activities and help with homework. Tiaira organized more than 20 current UNCG students to serve as mentors in the program. She also coordinates field trips for students such as career fairs and visits to local universities.

Hairston Middle students in the program value the academic and moral support they receive from UNCG students. "One thing I like about it, is you are free to be yourself. We have a judgement free zone. It is an overall fun time," says Jer'shann Cephus, 8th grader in the male group. "It has boosted my confidence and makes me feel like I can do better in school when I am not concerned about what other people think." Taleigha Caviness, 8th grader in the girls group adds, "I like that I can talk to somebody. We talk about relationships and how to carry ourselves and insecurities. The group encourages me to keep my grades up and have a positive attitude in school so I feel like I'm doing better."

Tara Reese, EC teacher who nominated Moragne says, “Tiaira works hard to reach as many students as she can at Hairston Middle School. She encourages students to participate in the after school program and receive the opportunity to work with caring individuals who emphasize the importance of academics and being successful in the future.”

As the GCS Volunteer of the Month, Tiaira Moragne was presented with a $50 VISA gift card, courtesy of Rice Toyota who has sponsored the program since 2013. During the month of March, her photo will hang at the district’s central offices, Hairston Middle School and Rice Toyota Collision Center on Battleground Ave.
