GCS Volunteers Get Involved Helping Students and Schools Succeed
The district’s volunteers provided service hours worth $11M during 2017-18
Greensboro, N.C. – “If our hopes of building a better and safer world are to become more than wishful thinking, we will need the engagement of volunteers more than ever.”— Kofi Annan
Whether it’s parents mentoring students or representatives from local businesses leading beautification projects, Guilford County Schools’ volunteers get involved guiding students, helping schools fulfill their needs and supporting district initiatives.
During the 2017-18 school year, 13,400 volunteers donated 451,671 hours of their time and talent to GCS students, schools and families. Their time is priceless, and at the national average of $24.69 per hour, this represents a donation of $11.2M. In the past three years, GCS has recruited a total of 37,961 volunteers who have contributed 1,433,520 hours of service. With an average national rate of volunteer time at $24.51, their value of service represents more than $35M.
GCS volunteers assist with activities such as PTA and athletic events, deliver snacks to teachers, chaperone field trips and ask others to join the GCS volunteer team. They also serve as reading buddies, lunch buddies, test proctors, media center helpers, classroom speakers and fundraising champions. Other activities include helping staff in front offices, collecting school supplies and donating backpacks with food.
“We are so proud of having folks in the community who are willing to step out of their comfort zone and help our schools,” says Mark Seagraves, principal at Southeast Guilford High School. “I enjoy volunteering because of the relationships and knowing I have something worthwhile to do,” says Kathy Syster, volunteer at Northwood Elementary School.
Thanks to Rice Toyota Collision Center, GCS recognizes a volunteer every month through its Volunteer of the Month program. The Volunteer of the Month receives a $50 gift card, recognition from the Guilford County Board of Education, and their photo is on display at the central administrative offices, the school where they volunteer, and at Rice Toyota Collision Center on Battleground Ave. Rice Toyota Collision Center has sponsored the program since 2013.
