Mel Morris Named GCS Volunteer of the Month for December 2019
Dec. 11, 2019 – What was expected to be a normal day of volunteering and greeting students as they started their day at Peck Elementary turned into a big surprise for Mel Morris filled with high fives, and cheers. As Mel Morris was recognized as the district’s Volunteer of the Month, students and staff lined the hallways to congratulate and thank him for all he has done.
Mel Morris is a dedicated and consistent volunteer who takes pride and joy in the relationships he has developed since becoming a volunteer this school year. He has shown up daily to welcome students as they enter the building and even treats Peck elementary staff each Friday with boxes of donuts to sweeten up their week. Mel has served as a judge at the school’s science fair, provided students in need with clothing, and has even helped with their outdoor garden.
“Our families and students look for him every day and smile when they see his friendly face. Only missing three days thus far this year, Mr. Morris has quickly become part of the fabric of our school and community,” says Dr. Ashley Triplett, Principal at Peck who nominated Mel. Despite past health challenges, Mel has constantly gone above expectations as a volunteer and has proven to be a servant leader.
As the GCS Volunteer of the Month, Mel was presented with a $50 Barnes & Noble gift card. During the month of December, his photo will hang at the district’s central offices and at Peck Elementary.
