December 10, 2024 -- The Board of Education is seeking public input on the following policies:
- Policy 1510/4200/7270 School Safety has been revised to reflect changes to state law requiring that school boards have a policy about threat assessment. The proposed revision includes training requirements for faculty, staff, and students, and outlines how the district safeguards students and staff with district and school threat assessment teams.
- Proposed Policy 6400/8340 Procurement of Goods and Services is recommended by legal counsel to house policy content related to purchasing. The policy moves some content from Policy 8100 and documents the district's current practices to comply with state law related to competition and ethics.
- Proposed Policy 6420/8460 Contracts with the Board is recommended to clarify policy content related to board approval thresholds for contracts currently located in Policy 8100. No changes to the current board approval thresholds are recommended. This proposed policy documents current practices to comply with state law related to pre-auditing, and reflects protections for the board and district if proper procedures are not followed.
- The proposed revisions to Policy 8100 Budgeting and Fiscal Management are recommended by legal counsel to focus this policy on the financial planning and reporting process. The revision reflects current practices to comply with state law, auditing requirements, and the collaborative budget process in place with Guilford County.
The 30-day public comment period ends January 9, 2025. Members of the public may submit their feedback by emailing boardclerk@gcsnc.com, or via U.S. Postal Service to ATTN: Policy Comments, Office of the Superintendent, 712 N. Eugene St., Greensboro, NC 27401.
December 10, 2024 -- The Board of Education is seeking feedback on the proposed traditional academic calendars for the 2026-2027 and 2027-2028 school years.
With input from the district's Calendar Committee, three (3) calendars have been developed for each school year. Each of the options includes 180 calendar days of school and 1,080 hours of instruction. Each calendar also includes district-wide teacher workdays planned to coincide with the end of each grading period, and optional workdays on dates of significant community events, including Yom Kippur and election day in even-numbered years.
For each year, Option A provides an optional workday in January prior to students returning from winter break. The first day of school is on a Monday, and the last day of school is on Thursday. Graduations would be able to commence at the conclusion of state testing on the last day of school. Option A is the calendar preferred by the district's Calendar Committee.
For each year, Option B prioritizes starting school on Wednesday to consider a shorter transitional first week for students. Because this eliminates two (2) instructional days in August, Option B does not feature an optional workday in January prior to students returning from winter break, and the last day of school is on Friday. Graduations would be able to commence at the conclusion of state testing on the last day of school.
For each year, Option C prioritizes ending school on Wednesday. The first day of school is on Monday. To maintain the 180-day school year, Option C does not feature an optional workday in January prior to students returning from winter break.
