    Steps to Career Exploration

    Step #1 - Self-Assessment - A career assessment is a quiz that you can take to determine a fitting major or career. The assessment consists of a series of questions, usually multiple choice. It asks you about your personality, values, interests and goals. Your results recommend various career paths based on your answers.

    Below is a Self-Assessment provided by the "BigFuture" College Board.  

     

    Step #2 - Identify Possible Careers - You will receive a list of careers based on your self-assessment. Select the career(s) that matches your interests.

     

    Step #3 - Do your research - After you select your list of careers, use the NC Occupations search engine to learn more about the careers you selected. This search engine will give you information on what each job does, what experience is required for the job, and how much you can expect to make. 

     

    Step #4 - Get Experience - Students can begin getting career-related experiences in high school through apprenticeships, coursework, internships, employment, and other activities.  

     

    Step #5 - Follow up with next steps - Does your selected career require a college education (community college, 4-yr college/university, or trade-school) or can you start right out of high school (entry-level)?

    Definitions

    Community College- a community college that offers programs where students can earn an associate degree in two years or even a certificate in one year or less. 

    College/ University - A four-year college is often a college or university that offers a variety of degree programs for students to earn their bachelor's degrees. 

    Trade School - A trade school, or vocational school, teaches students specific trade skills required for certain technical or mechanical trades.
