Mrs. Cathy Hailey
Welcome to the 2024-2025 Academic School Year!!! I am excited about "igniting student learning" in the upcoming school year!
I am the Reproductive Health and Safety Education/ Family Life Teacher for Northern Guilford Middle School. I have been here since the doors first opened in 2006 with only Grade 6 students in the building. I have been teaching long enough that my current students are the children of past students!
Let me begin by saying "Thank You" for allowing me to teach your student information required by the N.C. Essential Standards / Standard Course of Study. My goal is to provide your student (s) with Reproductive Health and Safety Education information that is needed now and for the rest of their lives.
I will only have your student for a short time, so I want to make a contribution that will last a lifetime.
I believe that "mindfulness" in the workplace, is the key to success. I come to class each day ready to teach. Students learn in my classroom because I am always ready for the day. Every class is different, but every student has a "thirst for knowledge!"
I follow the rules of A R A. A=Acknowledge my students, R=Respect them and their individuality and opinions and A= Appreciate their thoughts, ideas and passion for learning.
"A great teacher makes the classroom magic happen, regularly". She elicits her students "best efforts" and "engages their minds", so "that they leave class still alive with ideas and comments, and they talk about what went on in class with family when they get home".
I am the Reproductive Health and Safety Education / Family Life Teacher for three middle schools in Guilford County. The three schools I serve are:
1) Northern Guilford Middle, 2) Kiser Middle and 3) Northwest Guilford Middle. I am one of seven Reproductive Health and Safety Education Teachers throughout Guilford County Middle Schools.
I have been teaching teens for over 34 years. Many of which are with Guilford County Schools. Time sure does fly when you enjoy what you do! One pleasure of my job is, I have the opportunity of meeting and teaching "every" student in the schools that I serve. I am originally from Virginia. I worked as the Program Director of a teen parenting program. Working with teenage parents as young as 12 years old gave me a true appreciation for the pregnancy prevention program of Guilford County Schools.
Prior to being hired by Guilford County Schools nearly 30 years ago, I was the Health Education Coordinator for the Asheboro City School System. My major job responsibility was to create and implement a Family Life Curriculum for the entire school system ( grades K-12). I was also responsible for training Health and P.E. teachers to implement lessons within the curriculum. I worked very closely with School Board Members in the process.
Teacher of the Year I am a two-time recipient of North Carolina NC Shape and Guilford County Schools "Middle School Health Educator of the Year Award". Being selected as an NC SHAPE Teacher of the Year is one of the highest honors within the profession. Winning State Middle School Health TOY allowed me to be eligible to compete for the SHAPE Southern District TOY and receive National TOY recognition. NCAAHPERD (NC Shape) is an organization of athletics, health, physical education, recreation, and dance professionals whose mission is to provide advocacy, and unity for health, physical education, recreation, dance, and athletics professionals and students in order to enhance and promote the health of North Carolinians.
I strive to establish a partnership with parents to support student learning. To reinforce that partnership, all homework assignments for students in grades 7th and 8th require parent's signatures. The parent signature requirement reminds students that parents are the primary sexuality educators of their children and my role is to assist in the education of that student.
"Talk to Parents" homework assignments are encouraged for all 6th - 8th grade students.
Educate, Inspire, Learn and Change.
"Education is the Key to Making a Difference".
"My Teacher's Promise"
I promise you as a parent, that every day your child will learn something.
Some days they will bring it home in their hands.
Some days they will bring it home in their heads, and
Some days they will bring it home in their hearts.
Thank you once again for allowing me the opportunity to fulfill my "Teacher Promise".
