Advanced Placement (AP) Courses at High Point Central
AP Courses at High Point Central provide our students the opportunity to pursue college-level classes right here on our campus.
Our instructors are masters of their content, and have received subject-specific training from College Board in their curricula.
AP courses are delivered over the course of either a semester, or a year. In May, students sit for the AP Exam in their subject. Students who score at least 3 out of 5 on the AP Exam are eligible for university credit. Students receive grades each quarter, just like other HPC classes, except that when calculating grade point averages, AP courses are worth an extra point (for example, an A in Math 2 is worth 4 points on your GPA, but an A in AP Precalculus is worth 5 points).
Currently, the state of NC, funds the AP program, so students pay no class or exam fees to take these AP Courses.
IB students are encouraged to take AP courses in 9th and 10th grade to prepare themselves for the IB Diploma Programme, but they may not take AP courses in conjunction with their 11th and 12th grade IB schedules.
AP Courses are excellent for students who want a challenge in a particular subject area. These classes assist students in building a high-school resume that attracts colleges - AP classes prove to admissions officers that you are serious about learning. These classes not only allow students to earn college credit (for free) while still in high school and create a compelling resume, they also provide an academic challenge that insures readiness to excel at the college level.
