Happy Mother's Day to all our mother's, grandmothers, godmother's, and those who have filled the role of mom.
PTA MEETING:
Tuesday, May 13th is our next PTA meeting from 5:30pm – 6:30pm. This meeting will take place via Zoom. I will send the Zoom link Tuesday, May 13th.
SCHOOLWIDE DATA DAY:
Wednesday, May 14th, all students will receive their data cards for the 2024-2025 school year. The data day is scheduled for 8:30am – 11:30am. We will resume our schedule for the rest of the day. Students will still be in school until 3:20pm.
This data card will include the following:
- Number of absences
- NWEA MAP Fall, Winter, Spring Assessments for Reading and Math
- Interim Assessments for Math, Reading, and Science (8th Grade Only)
- End of Unit Assessments for Math, Reading, and Science (8th Grade Only)
By the end of this session, students will identify one area/standard to focus on to meet the goal set by the state’s projection percentile. If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s homeroom teacher, counselor, or administrator.
ATHLETICS THIS WEEK:
- Monday, May 12th Softball and Baseball will travel to Kernodle for games starting at 4:45pm.
- Wednesday, May 14th our Girls/Boys track teams will travel to Smith High School for their competition against Allen Middle starting at 4:45pm.
- Thursday, May 15th our softball and baseball teams will travel to Allen Middle for games starting at 4:45pm.

DÍA DE DATOS ESCOLARES:
El Miércoles 14 de Mayo, todos los estudiantes recibirán sus tarjetas de datos para el ciclo escolar 2024-2025. El día de datos está programado para las 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Esta tarjeta de datos incluirá lo siguiente:

Weekly Announcements 4/21/25

PTA MEETING:
Tuesday, April 22nd, we will have our monthly PTA meeting in the media center at 5:30pm. Please come out support as we discuss ways to celebrate students and staff for the rest of the year.
WELLNESS ASSESSMENT:
Next week students will complete a wellness survey provided by the district. The survey will be completed during lead block. This will be an opportunity for students to share their experiences in Tiger Nation about culture, engagement, and social emotional learning.
6th/7th Grade Dance:
PTA will have their final 6th/7th Grade Dance on Friday, April 25th from 6pm – 8pm. We will have tickets in advance during morning arrival for $5 and tickets at the door for $7. This is a cash only event for tickets and concessions. Any students who receive ISS or OSS between Monday, March 24th – Friday, April 25th can only attend the dance with a parent or guardian over the age of 18. If you are a chaperone and attending the event with your child, please complete the volunteer form found below:

REUNIÓN DE LA PTA:
El Martes 22 de Abril, tendremos nuestra reunión mensual de la PTA en el centro de medios a las 5:30 p.m. Por favor, venga y discutiremos las formas de celebrar a los estudiantes y al personal durante el resto del año.
EVALUACIÓN DE BIENESTAR:
La próxima semana, los estudiantes completarán una encuesta de bienestar proporcionada por el distrito. La encuesta se completará durante la hora de Lead Block. Weekly Announcements 4/7/25
Posted by Aislynn Denny on 4/6/2025Good evening, Tiger Families! This is Principal Chase Arrington at Western Guilford Middle School bringing you announcements for the week of Monday, April 6th – Friday, April 11th.
ASSESSMENTS THIS WEEK:
Tuesday, April 8th, all students will complete their Quarter 3 ELA Interim Assessments. Please have students arrive on time so we can begin testing at 8:50am.
REPORT CARD PICK UP/STUDENT LED CONFERENCES:
On Tuesday, April 8th, we will have the 3rd Quarter Report Card Pick Up and Student Led Conferences from 4:30pm – 7pm. This is a free-flowing event. When you arrive at school, you will enter through the main office area and go to your child’s homeroom teacher’s hallway. You will receive folders from your child’s teachers. In the folders, you will find a reflection form, work samples, and your child’s data card with identifying information about discipline, attendance, interim assessment, NWEA, and EOG Projection Scores. Your child will discuss goals and the next steps to create the best outcome for success. You will have a chance to ask your child questions and if needed, you can schedule a parent/teacher conference when you sign in to document your attendance.
Unfortunately, due to budget restraints, we will not serve food at this event. However, we hope to still see you attend to support your child!
During the Week of April 7th – April 11th, Tiger Nation will do the following themes:
Monday, April 7th – PJ Day
- Can’t wait for the break? Wear your favorite PJs to keep you cozy all day!
Tuesday, April 8th – Circle of Life
Each grade level will dress a different age:
- 6th Grade – Dress like babies
- 7th Grade – Dress like teenagers
- 8th Grade – Dress like Seniors/Elders
- Staff – Dress like kids/students
Wednesday, April 9th – Tropics Day
- Bring a touch of the tropics to school. Think Hawaiian shirts, sunglasses, and beach vibes.
Thursday, April 10th – Sports Day
- Gear up for outdoor fun! Wear your favorite Sport Jersey/Team Jersey
Friday, April 11th – School Spirit
- Show your Tiger Pride! Wear any WGMS Spirit Wear or Black and/or Gold
All students must comply with the WGMS dress code policy. Students will not be permitted to wear slides, or flip flops. Jerseys must have an undershirt, and the length of skirts/dresses must fall at the longest finger when arms are down by the side.
ATHLETICS THIS WEEK:
- On Monday, April 7th our Baseball and Softball Teams will travel to Kernodle for games starting at 4:45pm.
- On Wednesday, April 9th our Girls/Boys Track Teams, Softball, and Baseball teams will host Mendenhall Middle for games starting at 4:45pm.

QUARTER 3 AWARDS PROGRAM:
We will have our Quarter 3 Awards Program Friday, April 11th at the following times:
- 6th Grade: 8:30am – 9am
- 7th Grade: 9:30am – 10am
- 8th Grade: 10:15am – 10:45am
Invitations will come home this week for students receiving awards for A Honor Roll, A/B Honor Roll, Perfect Attendance, and Leader in Me Awards.
The only way we improve our practices is to hear from you and to hear about you and your child’s experiences.
Our school is implementing a whole-school transformational process called the Leader in Me, which teaches 21st-century leadership and life skills to students and creates a culture of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader. This discussion about leadership takes place each day during the first 30 minutes of the day. This is called Lead Block.
Our school will be conducting surveys to learn more about key areas of strength and areas of growth needed in our school. For us to have a holistic picture of what is going on in our school, we are asking all full-time staff members, parents/guardians, and students to take part in the survey.Parent Participation
You will be asked to complete a survey (without sharing your name or other identifying information) that will be available through the weblink below. The survey is completely voluntary, but we do hope to get feedback from one member of every household.
The parent/guardian survey takes about 12 minutes to complete and will ask questions about your child and about his or her experience in our school. If you have more than one child attending the school, you will be asked to think about the oldest child's experiences as you answer questions related to his or her growth.Need a Different Language? EVALUACIONES DE ESTA SEMANA:
El Martes 8 de Abril, todos los estudiantes completarán sus evaluaciones intermedias de ELA del trimestre 3. Por favor, haga que los estudiantes lleguen a tiempo para que podamos comenzar las pruebas a las 8:50 am.
RECOGIDA DE BOLETAS DE CALIFICACIONES/CONFERENCIAS DIRIGIDAS POR ESTUDIANTES:
El Martes 8 de Abril, tendremos la recogida de la boleta de calificaciones del 3er Trimestre y las conferencias dirigidas por estudiantes de 4:30 p.m. a 7 p.m. Este es un evento que fluira libremente. Cuando llegue a la escuela, entrará por la Oficina Principal y se dirigirá al pasillo del maestro de su hijo. Recibirá carpetas de los maestros de su hijo. En las carpetas, encontrará un formulario de reflexión, muestras de trabajo y la tarjeta de datos de su hijo con información de identificación sobre la disciplina, la asistencia, la evaluación interina, la NWEA y los puntajes de proyección EOG. Su hijo hablará sobre las metas y los próximos pasos para crear el mejor resultado para el éxito. Tendrá la oportunidad de hacerle preguntas a su hijo y, si es necesario, puede programar una conferencia de padres / maestros cuando se registre para documentar su asistencia.
Desafortunadamente, debido a restricciones presupuestarias, no serviremos comida en este evento. Sin embargo, ¡esperamos que aún asista para apoyar a su hijo!
El Consejo Estudiantil eligió tener una Semana de Celebracion antes de las Vacaciones de Primavera con cada día, destacando un tema diferente. Estos temas fueron creados por el Consejo Estudiantil.

- Personal – Vístete como niños/estudiantes
Miércoles, 9 de Abril – Día de los Trópicos
- Trae un toque del Trópico a la escuela. Piensa en camisas hawaianas, gafas de sol y vibraciones playeras.
Jueves 10 de Abril – Día del Deporte
- ¡Prepárate para la diversión al aire libre! Usa tu camiseta deportiva/camiseta de equipo favorita

Todos los estudiantes deben cumplir con la política del código de vestimenta de WGMS. No se permitirá que los estudiantes usen chanclas o chanclas. La única manera de mejorar nuestras prácticas es escuchar de usted y escuchar sus experiencias y las de su hijo.

WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH:
Happy Women’s History Month to all women of Tiger Nation and their Families! Thank you for your contributions to society. As we celebrate women during March, we will highlight a fact each morning during our announcements. Thank you for all you do to support Tiger Nation and your families!ACC TOURNAMENT:
Permission slips were sent home with 6th and 7th grade students last week for the ACC Women’s Tournament field trip. 7th Grade will be attending the game on Thursday, March 6th and 6th grade will be attending Friday, March 7th. The cost is $9. Permission slips and the $9 are due on Monday, March 3rd at 12pm. We will be ordering tickets that afternoon, so no late payments or permission slips will be accepted after this date. If you have questions, for 6th grade contact Ms. Benoy at benoys@gcsnc.com and for 7th grade contact Ms. King at kingt@gcsnc.com.
SPRING SPORTS TRYOUTS:
Tryouts for spring sports starts Monday, March 3rd – Wednesday, March 5th. Track and Field will have tryouts until 5pm. Softball and Baseball will have tryouts until 5:30pm. Please contact Coach Sexton or Coach Phillips if you have any questions.
PTA Meeting:
On Tuesday, March 18th is the next PTA Meeting in the media center from 5:30pm – 6:30pm. Please come out and support your WGMS PTA as we prepare end of year events for Tiger Nation!
RAMADAN:
Ramadan is the ninth month of Islamic Lunar Calendar. During this time, Muslims fast from dawn until sunset, abstaining from food, drink, and other physical needs to purify the soul, and develop self-discipline. The fast is a means of empathy, fostering a sense of unity and compassion for those in need. Attached are the prayer times and locations for students. Thank you to Ms. Sultana for her organization to support Tiger Nation’s Diverse Community!

Las hojas de permiso y los $ 9 vencen el Lunes 3 de Marzo a las 12 p.m.    Ordenaremos los boletos esa tarde, por lo que no se aceptarán pagos atrasados ni recibos de permiso después de esta fecha.  Si tiene preguntas, para 6º grado comuníquese con la Sra. PRUEBAS DEPORTIVAS DE PRIMAVERA:

SCHOOL LEADERSHIP TEAM MEETING:
Tuesday, February 25th, the School Leadership Team will meet in the media center for our monthly meeting at 3:50pm. If you have any questions/concerns, please contact your grade level’s parent representative.
QUARTER 3 INTERIM REPORTS:
Students will receive Quarter 3 interim reports Wednesday, February 26th. Please sign and have your child return their interim report to their teachers.
QUARTER 2 AWARDS PROGRAM:
We will have our Quarter 2 Awards Program Friday, February 28th, 2025, at the following times:

MANDATORY TEACHER WORKDAY:
Monday, February 17th, 2025, is a Mandatory Teacher Workday for GCS. Staff members will be attending various professional developments and workshops across the district.
ATHLETICS THIS WEEK:
Congratulations to our WGMS Tigers Boys Basketball team on qualifying for the GCS Middle School Basketball Tournament. Our Boys are the 5th seed and will travel to Allen Jay on Tuesday, February 18 at 5:00 for the first round of the tournament! Let’s wish them luck! Go Tigers!
Congratulations to our Wrestling Team for officially securing another UNDEFEATED Conference Championship. This makes three consecutive years as conference Champions! Way to go, Western Guilford Middle Wrestling Team!
We are also proud of our Award-Winning Cheerleaders and our Girls Basketball Team for a season that showed your grit, perseverance and growth! You and your coaches should be proud of yourselves! Great job to our Winter Tiger Athletics!

Try Outs for Boy’s and Girl’s Track, Baseball and Softball will be held on March 3rd, 4th and 5th. WGMS Sports Participation Packets must be hand delivered by the student to ONLY Coach Sexton or Coach Phillips by 3:30PM, Thursday, February 27th.
*** There will be NO EXCEPTIONS to this deadline***
Packets will not be accepted after this deadline for Spring Sports. WGMS Sports Participation Packets can be found with Coach Sexton, Coach Phillips, in the front office, and on the WGMS website under athletics.
Students who have already tried out for a sport this year must see Coach Sexton or Coach Phillips by 3:30PM, Thursday, February 27th to check the status of their sports packet including their physical and concussion form, as well as their eligibility.
Eligibility for Spring Sports is based on Semester 1 of the 2024/2025 school year. In addition to the up-to-date WGMS Sports Participation Packet, to be eligible for Spring Sports, students must have passed 5 out of 7 classes and not have more than 13 days absent from school. Students also must live in the WGMS school zone or have a letter of reassignment on file.
A student may not take part in any middle school sport if his or her 15th birthday comes on or before August 31st of the current school year. All sports-related information and documents can also be found on the Western Guilford Middle Website under Athletics.

QUARTER 2 AWARDS PROGRAM:

VALENTINE’S DAY DANCE:
We will have a schoolwide Valentine’s Day themed dance Friday, February 21st from 6pm – 8pm.
The cost is $5 in advance and $7 at the door. Students can buy tickets during arrival Tuesday, February 18th – Friday, February 21st. Students who receive ISS/OSS February 10th – Friday 21st must have an adult chaperone at the dance with them. We will not accept payments via Cash App for this event.

Important Message for our 6th Grade Parents:
Ms. Kouba will be out of the building with limited access to her cell phone and email until February 5th. She will return to Tiger Nation Thursday, February 6th. We have two former principals returning to Tiger Nation to support 6th grade in her absence. Please welcome Ms. Melinda Mayhew and Ms. Lisa Jordan to Tiger Nation. TEACHER WORKDAY:
Monday, January 27th is a teacher’s workday for Guilford County Schools. There is no school for students. Staff will be in various workshops and professional developments throughout the day. Please allow at least 24 hours for staff to respond to emails or phone calls.
LEARN HOW TO CODE:
NCSSM Girls Who Code is excited to offer a free online program for middle school students interested in learning how to code in python. Participants will be mentored by students at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics with a strong computer science background. The camp will run every Tuesday and Thursday from February 11th to March 11th between 5-6 PM. Hello Tiger Families, this is Principal Arrington, bringing you an exciting update from our Tiger News Crew.
The Tiger News Crew will meet during each grade level’s first encore period for the rest of the school year. During this time, students will work as a team under the guidance of Ms. Denny, our media specialist, to produce the WGMS morning show that will air three times a week.
Students will write the scripts, create the credits/title cards, edit the videos, and anchor the show. Students will also learn filming techniques, media literacy, and journalism ethics.
Students will receive quarterly and semester grades. If your child is interested in enrolling in this class, please complete the interest survey.
The survey will close at the end of the day, Tuesday 1/28.

MLK Holiday:
On Monday we will celebrate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Although we celebrate on the 3rd Monday of each month, his actual date of birth is January 15. Dr. King was a visionary leader and advocate for equality who spearheaded the civil rights movement in America through nonviolent protests. As the youngest person to ever receive the Nobel Peace Prize, Dr. King is widely regarded as America's pre-eminent advocate of nonviolence and one of the greatest nonviolent leaders in world history. GCS will be closed for students and staff in honor of Dr. King’s birthday and contributions to society.
SCHOOL DEVICES:
Students must bring tablets back to school each time we distribute them for the possibility of Remote Learning.
ASSESSMENTS:
- Wednesday, January 22nd 7th Grade Math, 8th Grade Math, and Math 1 will take their Quarter 2 Interim Assessments.
- Friday, January 24th, 8th Grade Science will take their Quarter 2 Interim Assessments.
Please have students arrive on time so we can begin promptly at 8:50am.

- Friday, January 24th is the end of Quarter 2 and the end of Semester 1. School is closed to students Monday, January 27th for teachers to complete Quarter 2 and Semester 1 grades.
- Those students in semester long encore classes will receive new encore classes Tuesday, January 28th. We will review new schedules with students next week.
- If students are in orchestra, band, chorus, ESL, 7th or 8th Grade Spanish, they will remain in their same encore classes for 2nd semester and receive only one new class.
REPORT CARDS:
Students will receive Report Cards on Wednesday, February 5th at dismissal. You can continue to check your child’s progress via Parent Portal and Canvas. If you need aid with logging into either platform, please contact the school and we will provide support.

It is really the most wonderful time of the year! We hope the students enjoyed seeing their teachers and staff complete our first underground spirit week. Staff had an opportunity to build culture with different themes each day. Students started to look forward to each day’s theme.
Quarter 2 Interim Reports:
Quarter 2 Interim Reports should have been signed and returned by Friday, December 13th. Teachers will begin communicating with parents this week if students have not returned Interim Reports. If you did not receive your child’s interim report, you can reply to the email or Remind Message.

We will have a Winter Spirit Week December 16th – December 20th. The flier is attached for your convenience.

A SEASON OF GIVING THANKS:
As we approach our Thanksgiving Holiday Break, we would like students to identify one thing they can say they are thankful for during this season. They will have an opportunity to share this on Tuesday, November 26th. The link will be posted on their Canvas page. All students who share will have their name entered into a drawing for a special prize from Student Support Services!
PAJAMA DAY:
Students have asked and we are happy to honor their request for a Pajama Day Tuesday, November 26th. Students will be permitted to wear pajama pants. Appropriate onesies are permitted. Tops and bottoms should still follow the dress code. Students are required to wear closed toe shoes. Students are not permitted to wear slides or bedroom slippers.
SIGNED REPORT CARDS:
Parents/Guardians, please return the signed copy of your child’s report card and you will receive the original copy. If you need a copy of your child’s report card, please reply to this email, Remind Message, reach out to the front office, or contact the homeroom teacher.
FALL PICTURE DRAFTS:
Drafts of the fall pictures are in, and we will provide these to homeroom teachers to send home with students this week. You will have an access code to text to receive access and ongoing alerts. You can also visit the website listed on the flier. This access is specific to your child only.
THANKSGIVING BREAK:
There is no school for students and staff Wednesday, November 27th – Friday, November 29th.
We look forward to seeing our Tiger Scholars return Monday, December 2nd, 2024. If you are traveling this holiday or staying in town, I hope you have a safe and enjoyable holiday with your family and friends. Tiger Nation is thankful and honored to have the opportunity to share in the education experience of your child.

UNA TEMPORADA DE AGRADECIMIENTO:
A medida que nos acercamos a nuestras vacaciones de Acción de Gracias, nos gustaría que los estudiantes identifiquen una cosa por la que puedan decir que están agradecidos durante esta temporada. Tendrán la oportunidad de compartir esto el Martes 26 de Noviembre. El enlace se publicará en su página de Canvas. ¡Todos los estudiantes que compartan su nombre participará en un sorteo para un premio especial de los Servicios de Apoyo Estudiantil!
DÍA DEL PIJAMA:
Los estudiantes han pedido y estamos felices de honrar su solicitud de un Día del Pijama el Martes 26 de Noviembre. A los estudiantes se les permitirá usar pantalones de pijama. Se permiten mamelucos apropiados. Las blusas y los pantalones deben seguir el código de vestimenta. Se requiere que los estudiantes usen zapatos cerrados. No se permite que los estudiantes usen chanclas o pantuflas en el dormitorio.
BOLETINES DE CALIFICACIONES FIRMADOS:
Padres/Tutores, por favor devuelvan la copia firmada de la boleta de calificaciones de su hijo y recibirán la copia original. Si necesita una copia de la boleta de calificaciones de su hijo, responda a este correo electrónico, mensaje de recordatorio, comuníquese con la oficina principal o comuníquese con el maestro de aula.
FOTOS DE OTOÑO:
Las fotos de otoño están listos, y se los proporcionaremos a los maestros para que los envíen a casa con los estudiantes esta semana. Tendrá un código de acceso a un mensaje de texto para recibir acceso y alertas continuas. También puede visitar el sitio web que aparece en el folleto. Este acceso es específico solo para su hijo.
VACACIONES DE ACCIÓN DE GRACIAS:
No hay clases para los estudiantes y el personal del Miércoles 27 al Viernes 29 de Noviembre.
Esperamos ver a nuestros Tiger Escolares regresar el Lunes 2 de Diciembre . Si viaja estas vacaciones o se queda en la ciudad, espero que tengan unas vacaciones seguras y agradables con su familia y amigos.
