Classroom Guidance

  • Kindergarten and first-grade classroom guidance focuses on appropriate social skills. For some of our students, this is their first classroom experience.  We focus on school success skills such as listening and following directions, waiting and taking turns, sharing and working cooperatively with peers. Kindergarten and first-grade students learn with an animal friend who has difficulty navigating school behaviors and friendship skills.  Howard has great friends and adults along the way that guide him into making more appropriate choices.

Second and third grade are learning about positive character traits and different people who demonstrate a specific character trait from history or present-day through Character Tree. Some of the character traits we focus on our Respect, Kindness, Courage, Perseverance, Gratitude and Integrity. The Character Tree has recorded videos with supplemental activities for the students to participate in.

Fourth and fifth grade are learning about the 7 Habits of Happy Kids.  This book is based on the popular adult book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.  It is written in a child-friendly language with individual stories about animal characters that live in a community together.  There are seven stories each focusing on one of the habits.  Students are participating in guided PowerPoint presentations through the 7 habits and how to apply each habit to school, home and community activities.
