July 23, 2024 – Lindley Elementary will be rebuilt as new construction. During the discussion on Tuesday, the board committed to taking the historical nature of the neighborhood into account and keeping the community engaged throughout the design process.
The school board considered renovating or replacing the 1928 building, which needed to be enlarged to increase student capacity and address enrollment growth in this area. The estimated rebuild cost is $76,264,183 compared to a $93,868,755 estimated renovation cost. By rebuilding Lindley, the district is saving Guilford County taxpayers more than $17 million.
A report from SHP Architects, the design firm of record, showed that the existing physical condition of the building has major deficiencies including safety and security, structural and mechanical systems, hazardous construction materials, as well as code compliance and educational adequacy. The report showed that new construction on the compact 11-acre site will save millions of taxpayer dollars and allow the project to be completed four months sooner.
“We are thankful to the community for its continued support of Lindley Elementary,” says Superintendent Dr. Whitney Oakley. “This new building will better allow Lindley Elementary to serve students as it begins its second century and for generations to come while saving taxpayers millions.”
The project will now move to the design phase and is expected to be complete in 2027.
