How to Calculate Your GPA (Grade Point Average)
Your Grade Point Average is a combined calculation of your grades. A GPA can be calculated for the semester (semester GPA) or for your entire high school career (cumulative GPA).
Many decisions are made from your grade point average such as admission into college, scholarship approval, and participation in extra-curricular activities. With so much riding on this number, it is crucial that you learn how to calculate it for yourself.
Each letter grade you receive can be equated to a point value depending on the level of the course (Regular, Honors, or AP) as indicated in this chart.
Grade point averages can be weighted or unweighted. An unweighted GPA is calculated using the point value for the Regular level courses- even if you are taking honors or AP courses. Some colleges/scholarships request your unweighted GPA. However, others will take into account your weighted GPA, which is calculated using the Honors and AP point values as indicated in the chart on the right.
