GCS Announces Principal for Wiley Elementary
Tavy Fields will serve as the new principal for Wiley Elementary, Guilford County Schools (GCS) announced Tuesday. Fields has been the assistant principal at Montlieu Elementary Academy of Technology since August 2011, playing a significant role in the school’s academic turnaround. Her appointment will be effective July 1.
While at Montlieu, Fields served as the chairperson of the African-American Male Goal Team, facilitating the strategic planning of the school’s African American Male Initiative. She coordinated professional development, conducted data analysis and provided teacher leadership development. As the school administrator for the Exceptional Children’s Department, Fields helped the school achieve a composite growth of 24 percentage points for students with disabilities.
Prior to joining Montlieu, Fields completed a yearlong administrative internship at Pearce Elementary as an N.C. Principal Fellow. During her internship, she was granted extensive literacy experience and training, assisted with school-wide staff development, conducted staff meetings and created Pearce’s Positive Bus Behavior Program, which resulted in reduced bus referrals.
Fields began her career as an educator at Welborn Middle as a seventh-grade science and math teacher. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry Education from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and Master of School Administration from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Fields will replace Dr. Sheila Gorham, who was named the principal of Allen Middle. Wiley Elementary experienced great academic improvement during the last two years. The school saw its End-of-Grade test scores jump 18.7 percentage points between 2011 and 2012, making it one of the district's most improved schools in 2012.
