ACT Releases Scores for 2013 Graduates, Class of 2014
ACT Inc. released the 2013 Graduating Senior report this morning, which includes the final district, state and national average scores for the Class of 2013. The Class of 2013 were the first graduates required by the state of North Carolina to take the ACT in their junior year. Also today, ACT released district and state average scores for members of the Class of 2014.
North Carolina selected the ACT as its new college readiness measure for high schools because it measures science as well as mathematics, reading and English. The ACT is a curriculum-based achievement test consisting of four separate exams in English, reading, mathematics and science as well as an optional writing assessment. The ACT is scored on a scale of 1 to 36 with 36 being the highest possible composite score.
In March of 2012, for the first time, all juniors in GCS took the test during the school day. GCS released these results in Sept. 2012:
- GCS: 18.0
- NC: 18.2
New today, ACT released the 2013 Graduating Senior report, which reflects scores for graduating seniors who took the ACT at any point during high school. This data includes any students who elected to retake the ACT on their own for a higher score – which varies from district to district. If a student took the test more than once in high school, only the last score is included in the report.
Final numbers of all Class of 2013 graduates (includes students who took the ACT again on their own as a senior):
- GCS: 18.2
- NC: 18.7
- US: 20.9
Again, this data reflects the first year North Carolina required all juniors to take the ACT, not just those who were preparing to go to college. Nationally, a record 1.8 million members of the Class of 2013 took the ACT – that’s 54 percent of the graduating class. Just 12 U.S. states administer the ACT to all members of the junior class.
ACT also released district and state data on members of the Class of 2014, who took the ACT as juniors in March of 2013:
- GCS: 18.4 (+ 0.4)
- NC: 18.4 (+0.2)
GCS saw an increase of 0.4 points, bringing the district even with the state numbers. The Strategic Plan 2016: Achieving Educational Excellence: Personalizing Learning focuses on increasing ACT composite scores from 18.0 to 20.0 by 2016. In addition, GCS is looking at ways to allow students to take an ACT preparation course for credit in middle or high school, to further improve student readiness.
