New Principals Named for Simkins, Hampton Elementary Schools
Two familiar faces in Guilford County Schools (GCS) will have new roles next year. Lisa Jordan, current principal at Pleasant Garden Elementary, has been appointed to lead the new Simkins Elementary, which is scheduled to open in August. Thyais Maxwell, current principal at Sumner Elementary, will lead the turnaround process at Hampton Elementary University Partnership Magnet.
Jordan, who has been principal at Pleasant Garden Elementary since 2011, will lead the new school, which will serve approximately 700 students in kindergarten through fifth grade. In the 2012-13 school year under Jordan’s leadership, Pleasant Garden students met 100 percent of their math targets and 91.6 percent of their reading targets. Jordan started her career in education as a fifth-grade teacher in GCS, first at Jesse Wharton Elementary and then at Jefferson Elementary.
Maxwell will become principal at Hampton Elementary University Partnership Magnet, which will undergo a school turnaround program. Since becoming principal at Sumner in 2011, students’ early literacy proficiency scores have increased more than 10 percentage points, and Maxwell has used student and teacher data to spur growth effectively. She has also implemented community and parent-involvement programs with great success, and her “One School, One Book” program in 2012 resulted in an invitation to the White House from Michelle Obama.
Also Tuesday, the board approved a new principal for Fairview Elementary, another school that is beginning a school turnaround program this year. The school will be led next year by a newcomer to the district, Angela Dawson. Dawson comes to Guilford County from Cumberland County, where she has been principal at Sunnyside Elementary since 2010. In that time, test scores have improved from 65.4 percent proficiency before her arrival to 80.2 percent proficiency under her tenure. The school has been recognized as a High Progress Title I school for three consecutive years.
