GCS Names Two New Principals
Two Guilford County elementary schools are getting new leaders. GCS Superintendent Maurice “Mo” Green announced the appointments during the June 10 Board of Education meeting.
Jonita Taylor will be the new principal of Shadybrook Elementary School. Dr. Taylor is currently an assistant principal at Foust Elementary, where she serves as the school testing coordinator, evaluates, coaches and supports teachers and measures the effectiveness of classroom instruction as well as other measures of student success. While at Foust, students experienced growth in reading and math, and African-American males went from 41 percent proficient in 2012 to 65 percent proficient in 2014.
Before working at Foust, Taylor was the curriculum facilitator at Gibsonville Elementary. She began her career in education as a teacher in Hillsborough, N.C., and was also a curriculum facilitator and administrative intern in Haw River, N.C.
Taylor has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and English from North Carolina Central University, a master’s in elementary education and literacy from North Carolina State and a doctorate in educational leadership and cultural foundations from UNC Greensboro.
Weaver Walden will be the new principal of Oak Hill Elementary. He is currently an assistant principal at Ferndale Middle, where he analyzes student achievement and discipline data, handles transportation, athletics and disciplinary issues and coaches teachers in instructional strategies. While at Ferndale Middle, student suspensions dropped dramatically in one year, students he supervised met expected growth in reading and math, and African-American males saw significant progress in reading and math.
Walden started his career with GCS in 1997 as a teacher at Fairview Elementary. He has also been an administrative intern at Johnson Street Global Studies. He has a bachelor’s in elementary education from North Carolina A&T University and a master’s in school administration from UNC Greensboro.
