GCS Requesting Bids for Three Remaining Priority Projects
Guilford County Schools will be requesting bids to complete the three remaining priority projects.
The Guilford County Board of Commissioners approved the transfer of $50,279,291 to the projects at Smith High, Western High and Guilford Middle last week.
GCS will advertise for bids this spring, with plans to start work on physical education improvements at Smith and Western in May. The school replacement project at Guilford Middle would be on track to begin in June.
In 2008, Guilford County voters approved $457 million in school construction bonds. To date, more than $350 million has been spent or is currently under contract. The nine priority projects are being paid for by money saved on earlier 2008 bond construction projects and redirected funds from the Airport Area High School project.
Last March, county commissioners approved allocating $60 million to start work on renovations and expansions at Northwood Elementary and High Point Central High, new traffic patterns at Dudley and Northwest High, renovations and upgrades at Bluford Elementary and a replacement school for Hunter Elementary.
On Thursday, the board approved using contingency funds to cover a budget shortfall on the Hunter Elementary School replacement project and a contract amendment to Metcon, Inc. / W.C. Construction to complete construction and demolition services for the project.
The board also received updates on the five remaining priority projects. Work has already begun at Bluford Elementary and Northwood Elementary. Construction is expected to begin in the coming weeks at High Point Central and the district is receiving bids for phase two of the Dudley High project. Finally, phase one of road and traffic improvements at Northwest High is complete. GCS is working with the Department of Transportation to determine if phase two is needed.
