Sheehan Named Western Region Superintendent
Dr. Anne “Meg” Sheehan will join Guilford County Schools as the new Western Region Superintendent.
Sheehan brings with her 28 years of educational experience, and has worked her way up from teacher to principal and is currently serving as an Area Superintendent with Wake County Public Schools. In that position, she designed a plan to support 12 highly impacted elementary schools and implemented long-term strategies for school improvement. She also served as a leadership coach at the Piedmont Triad Leadership Academy, where she provided direct coaching and support to leaders within Guilford County.
“Dr. Sheehan understands what it takes to effectively turn around schools,” says Dr. Nakia Hardy, GCS Chief Academic Officer. “The three schools she served as a principal started with low performance scores, but by the time she left had increased proficiency rates by double digits. She has been able to pass on her knowledge by coaching other principals on strategic cultural changes designed to increase student achievement. I am excited to see what she will do here for students in Guilford County.”
As principal of North Graham Elementary in Alamance-Burlington Schools, performance composite scores jumped from 46.6 percent to 74 percent and writing proficiency from 17 to more than 76 percent. At Broadview Middle the performance composite increased from 59.8 percent to 73.3 percent and the number of office referrals and suspension rates significantly decreased. Finally, when she served as co-principal at Cummings High School their overall performance composite increased more than ten percentage points in one year and saw writing proficiency move from 43.5 percent to 67.1 percent.
“I am grateful for this new opportunity to serve the families, and particularly young people, in my home community,” says Sheehan. “There are great things being done in Guilford County Schools as well as challenges, and I look forward to working towards even greater success for our students.”
Sheehan earned her doctorate of education from UNC-Chapel Hill and holds two master degrees, one from North Carolina A&T State University and the other from UNC-Greensboro. She received numerous honors including the UNC-Greensboro Young Alumni Award, the North Carolina Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development’s “Lighthouse School” Award, Principal of the Year for Alamance-Burlington Schools, Teacher of the Year and more.
