Naming of Grimsley High’s Sawyer Gym Floor Open for Comment
The community has 30 days to comment on a proposal to name the floor of Grimsley High’s Sawyer Gym after former coach, Phil Weaver.
Weaver served Grimsley as a teacher, counselor and coach for 42 years, including the eight years he coached after his retirement. During his tenure, Weaver served as head coach for the men’s and women’s varsity basketball teams and the softball team. He also served as assistant coach for football, baseball, men’s basketball and golf.
The nomination includes letters from Weaver’s former co-workers and athletes.
“While Coach Weaver taught me a lot about the game of basketball, it was the wisdom he passed on that I have carried with me off the court that has meant the most,” wrote Roxanne Neumann, Class of ’07. “His insistence on our priorities being our family, faith, school and then the team gave me insight into what is truly important in life.”
The proposed “Phil Weaver Court” would be in the Sawyer Gym, named after another Grimsley legend, Coach Robert Sawyer, who wrote, “The Grimsley families of his athletes, most importantly, were blessed that Coach Weaver brought to the table a most dignified professional atmosphere and respect for the safety and well-being of his athletes at home and on the road to competitions.”
The community is invited to comment on the nomination for the next 30 days via email to gcscomments@gcsnc.com or via courier or U.S. Mail to Western Region Office, GCS Attn: Naming of Gymnasium Floor in the Sawyer Gym at Grimsley High School, 900 English Road, High Point, NC, 27262.
