Edward Squires Named to Board of Education
Edward Squires Jr. will be the next representative for District 1 on the Guilford County Board of Education. Board members selected Squires out of a pool of eight candidates during a special meeting Wednesday night.
Board members said they were impressed with all of the candidates for the position, but Squires stood out of the crowd.
“He’s got education degrees, he’s energetic and he’s a volunteer,” said board member Linda Welborn.
As the member for District 1, Squires will represent Andrews High, Fairview Elementary, Florence Elementary, The Middle College at GTCC-High Point, Montlieu Academy of Technology, Parkview Village Expressive Arts Elementary, Penn-Griffin School for the Arts, Triangle Lake Montessori, Union Hill Elementary and Welborn Academy of Science and Technology.
Squires, a graduate of Andrews High, holds an associate degree in early childhood education, a bachelor’s in birth to kindergarten education and currently serves on both the boards for the Housing Authority for the City of High Point and the Planning and Zoning Board for the City of High Point.
The seat was previously held by Christopher Gillespie who resigned after learning his home address is not within the District 1 boundaries. Squires will serve the remainder of the term, which expires in Dec. 2016.
