Baseball Field at Western High Could be Named for Former Coach
March 14, 2023 – A baseball field at Western High may bear the name of longtime coach and athletic director Chris Causey, who retired last year. The proposal to name the baseball field "Chris Causey Field” was presented to the Board of Education on Tuesday, who voted to allow the public to comment on the idea for a period of 30 days.
Causey graduated from Western High as a star baseball player and taught there for nearly 20 years, retiring in 2022. He served as both head football coach and head baseball coach, leading the baseball team to 11 conference championships and four conference tournament championships. He also spent more than six years as Western High’s athletic director.
Macon Smith, Western High class of 2010, wrote in support: “Coach Causey transcended the ordinary meaning of what we traditionally believe a coach to be, extending his leadership and mentorship far beyond the field; he has been one of the greatest examples in my life of a person who gives more of himself than he ever expects to receive in return, who earnestly strives to impact lives in a meaningful way, and who loves his family with fierceness and integrity. He is one of the few people I would list as being the most influential in my life through the humility and strength with which he approaches every facet of his life. There is no person I've known more deserving of every honor that could be bestowed upon them than Coach Causey.”
The public may submit feedback on the name for a period of 30 days, ending April 13. To share feedback, email boardclerk@gcsnc.com and use the subject line Naming. The public can also mail comments to Naming Comments, ATTN: Office of the Superintendent, 712 N. Eugene Street, Greensboro, NC 27401.
