Masks are optional in Guilford County Schools
As of February 21, 2022, masks are optional for students, staff and visitors inside Guilford County Schools facilities.
The school board based its decision on the decline in COVID-19 cases and the recommendation of Governor Cooper to make masking optional in public schools across North Carolina. Local public health officials indicate that vaccination is now the most important safety strategy for preventing the spread of COVID-19 and reducing serious illness. The ABC Science Collaborative has also indicated that local school districts should make their own determinations regarding masking.
The Guilford County Board of Education will continue to base its decisions on science and the best advice of public health officials as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to evolve. All protocols, including masks being optional, are subject to change based on new information and research in the future.

Who should wear a mask now that they are optional?
The Guilford County Board of Education voted February 21, 2022, to shift to a mask-optional policy for all GCS students, staff and visitors. Per state law, the Board reviews this decision monthly.
The school board based their decision on the recommendation of North Carolina public health officials, which are reflected in the current NCDHHS StrongSchools Toolkit.
There are still several groups who should wear a mask, according to the Toolkit, including:

-
What kind of face covering or mask is best?
Face coverings/face masks help limit the spread of COVID-19 and are still recommended for certain groups, including those who have been sick or exposed recently and those who are at high risk. GCS also supports all who choose to wear a mask.
The CDC has shared the following recommendations for effective masks. Masks should:
- Be made of washable and breathable fabric that is tightly woven. Lace, bandanas, old T-shirts and stretchy knits do not provide sufficient protection.
- Have at least two layers of material.
- Fit snugly to the child’s face and cover the nose and mouth.
- Should be cleaned every day if non-disposable and replaced each day if disposable.
- Be handled by the ear loops or ties only.
- Comply with all GCS policies and the Student Code of Conduct, as well as school dress codes. Non-compliance may result in student/personnel disciplinary action.
