Carnegie Mellon Pre-College Programs: Summer Session (Links to an external site.), students take two full-length Carnegie Mellon courses in a variety of disciplines, ranging from Computer Science, History to Music Technology. Summer Academy for Math and Science (Links to an external site.), provides students from underrepresented communities the opportunity to achieve skills to pursue and complete majors in STEM fields. National High School Game Academy (Links to an external site.), for students who want to learn about modern video game development through a unique blend of left- and right-brain college-level work. Computational Biology (Links to an external site.), a three-week program for students looking to learn more about the intersection of the two disciplines. Unique programs in the Fine Arts - Architecture (Links to an external site.), Art (Links to an external site.), Design (Links to an external site.), Drama (Links to an external site.) or Music (Links to an external site.) – in which the students experience developing their skills in a conservatory or studio setting. Guided by the mentorship and instruction of our highly distinguished, permanent faculty members, students will improve their ability to analyze complex, ever-changing problems through astute investigations of culture and society.
Clemson C-CATS (Links to an external site.): Spend the weekend exploring Clemson University and building friendships with other top-performing students. Open to students in the top 10% of their class.
Cone Health Teen Volunteer Program: (Links to an external site.) Get hands-on experience in a hospital setting while experiencing the personal satisfaction of helping others. Opportunities are available at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Wesley Long Hospital, and MedCenter High Point. Must be at least 15 years of age by June 1. Must actively participate one day each week for all 4 weeks of the program. Must have a B average in high school (GPA=3.0+). Must attend a mandatory information session and orientation session, complete an application including a 100-word essay, provide a copy of immunizations, a current report card, and a picture (snapshot or driver's license). Greensboro Children’s Museum Volunteer (Links to an external site.): Are you ready to play? Greensboro Children’s Museum seeks high school volunteers who are enthusiastic about community involvement, have a passion for working with children and their families in a non-traditional environment, enjoy engaging and hands-on experiences and are responsible, punctual, flexible individuals who follow through with their commitments; must attend a mandatory volunteer orientation prior to starting volunteer shifts. Greensboro Youth Council (GYC): (Links to an external site.) Created to develop leadership and volunteer opportunities for Guilford County high school students through the planning and implementation of unique youth-run programs that benefit and serve the community. GYC operates year-round, offering service-learning (Links to an external site.) and volunteer opportunities (Links to an external site.) as well as skill-building workshops through the GYC Institute. July Experience at Davidson College: (Links to an external site.) A powerful pre-college summer academic program for rising high school juniors and seniors who are highly motivated, academically oriented, and self-disciplined.
MITES at MIT (Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science) (Links to an external site.): For high school juniors with an outstanding academic record and a passion for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The following students are strongly encouraged to apply: Those underrepresented in science and engineering, defined as being African American, Hispanic/Latino or Native American; Underserved, defined as coming from low socioeconomic means, which may be indicated by qualification for free/reduced lunch; Potentially the first family member to attend college; Absence of science and engineering degrees in family; Coming from a high school with low admittance rates to top-tier colleges, especially rural or predominantly minority high schools.
National Youth Leadership Forum: Medicine: (Links to an external site.) Held in nine cities across the country, this extraordinary program is reserved for motivated 9th-12th grade students with demonstrated leadership skills and an interest in medicine; students take part in an intensive examination of state-of-the-art diagnostic tools and future medical specialties; limited number of partial scholarships available based upon financial need, scholastic merit, leadership achievement, and other factors. School nomination required.
NC American Legion Student Trooper Program (Links to an external site.): A week-long program conducted at the NC Highway Patrol Training Center in Raleigh, cadets learn the use of police skills, drug detection, firearms safety, and precision driving, to name a few; includes rigorous physical training.
NC Governor's Page Program (Links to an external site.): A one week experience that offers students an in-depth view of state government. Pages are assigned to assist staff in the Governor’s Office. Pages tour multiple government buildings and historic sites during their stay including the Legislative Building, the State Capitol, the Executive Mansion, and the North Carolina Museum of History. Pages have the opportunity to meet with government officials, discuss how state government works, and how it impacts the lives of North Carolinians.

The NC State College of Education’s Leadership Institute for Future Teachers (LIFT): (Links to an external site.)LIFT is a five-day, residential program for students of color and bilingual students who are rising high school seniors in North Carolina interested in leadership development and also exploring a career in education. The program will be held on NC State’s campus with all expenses paid except for travel to and from Raleigh. (Sunday, June 14 – Thursday, June 18, 2020). In order to participate in LIFT, students must be nominated by high school counselors, teachers, principals, or parents, or they can self-nominate.
Shelton Challenge at NC State University (Links to an external site.): A transformational six-day summer experience for rising 9th-12th grade students with a 3.0+ unweighted GPA. All participants live on either the NC State or UNC-Charlotte campus and focus on core curriculum that includes: personal leadership assessment and interpersonal dynamics, the role of values and ethics in leadership, leadership traits and approaches, team building and empowering others, social responsibility, public speaking and goal setting.
Smith College Summer Programs for Young Women (Links to an external site.): A variety of summer programs in science and engineering, writing, women’s history, sustainability, and college admissions.
Summer Ventures in Science & Mathematics (Links to an external site.): a no-cost, state-funded 4-week summer program for academically talented North Carolina rising juniors and seniors who aspire to careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. If hands-on, independent learning is appealing to you, and you are excited about the idea of conducting research to answer questions that intrigue you, this is the program for you! Students reside on a college campus (UNC-C, UNC-W, ASU, or ECU). Application opens October 15 and closes Jan. 15.

Tarheel Girls State (Links to an external site.): Allows outstanding young women who are rising seniors to learn today how to lead tomorrow by creating their own government from the ground up; the non-partisan program attempts to teach and inculcate a love of country and to foster an understanding of the responsibilities of living in a free society; must rank in the top third of the junior class to be considered for selection.
UNC Asheville’s Pre-College Programs (Links to an external site.): introduces high school students to college-level study, university life, and career options in a dynamic learning environment. Each one-week program offers deep immersion into an academic topic, challenging activities, and the opportunity to engage with industry professionals. Many programs to choose from including, but not limited to, pre-med, aerospace engineering, human rights and international law, geology and ecology of Western NC streams, film scoring and sound design. All programs include hands-on learning and projects, and many programs will feature off-campus excursions. All students live on campus to fully experience university life and the surrounding community. Eligibility: Pre-College Programs are open to rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Dates: June 14-19, 2020 and June 21-26, 2020 Tuition: Programs start at $1,200 and includes lodging, meals, all course materials, activities, and excursions.

United States Naval Academy Summer Programs: Every summer, the United States Naval Academy (Annapolis, MD) hosts two summer programs aimed at high-performing math and science students. Current 8th through 10th-grade students are eligible to apply to their Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) programs and current 11th-grade students are eligible to apply to their Naval Academy Summer Seminar (NASS) if they are considering the Naval Academy as their college of choice. Summer Seminar introduces students to life at the Academy, where he/she will experience first-class academic, athletic, and professional training at the US Naval Academy. The Summer Seminar application will also serve as a preliminary application to the Academy that a student will complete before or during his/her senior year. Vanderbilt Summer Academy (Links to an external site.): Vanderbilt Summer Academy (VSA) is a residential academic program that offers accelerated courses, dynamic recreational activities, and the opportunity for academically gifted students to learn from content experts and each other within a supportive environment. VSA students reside in a residential hall and eat most of their meals in the Commons Dining Center (Links to an external site.), a short walk from the residence hall. Courses are held in classrooms across the Vanderbilt University campus. To be eligible for VSA, students may either submit ACT, SAT, or PSAT scores or a recent individual ability/achievement test at the 95th percentile and above in one or more subject areas. Wake Forest University Summer Immersion Programs (Links to an external site.): For rising 10th, 11th, and 12th graders, programs available in business, entrepreneurship, leadership, law, medicine, sports marketing, technology and more.
Youth Leadership Greensboro (YLG): (Links to an external site.) designed for outstanding high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors who want to develop leadership skills to make a difference in their community. Participants are exposed to local issues and hot topics facing the community. Previous topics include diversity, politics, media, health, education, law/justice, arts, economy, environment, and advocacy. Participants gain a fuller picture of how Greensboro works so they can become better advocates and problem-solvers. The program is held annually October through March. During six full-day sessions, the class visits businesses and other organizations to meet with experts and influencers. In addition to the daytime sessions, class members work in small groups to more deeply explore one topic of interest. Groups present their findings publicly at the end of the year. Through this process, the program develops a network of emerging leaders who work together to improve our community. Applications for 2020-2021 class will open on May 1.
