Scholarship Announcement! John R. Kernodle Memorial Scholarship
Posted by Shalena Sarver on 1/8/2021Good afternoon – I’m writing today to make you aware of a prestigious scholarship managed by The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro. The John R. Kernodle Memorial Scholarship is intended for a high school senior planning to become a teacher. This scholarship awards up to $40,000 for four years, which is the most of any that we award at our foundation. The past recipients of this scholarship have often been offered teaching contracts with Guilford County Schools, even before completing their college degree! Because the deadline for applications is approaching, I would ask that you share this opportunity with your students soon, especially if your school has a Teacher Cadet Program. Due date for the application is Jan. 31 and the student can access it here. An account will need to be created first. A description of the scholarship is below.
Thanks in advance for sharing this opportunity with your students and please reach out if you have questions!
The John R. Kernodle, Jr. Memorial Scholarship was established in 1996 by a group of Guilford County citizens to honor the memory of John R. Kernodle, Jr. The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarships for future teachers to fund their undergraduate studies. Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of financial need and merit to graduating seniors of the Guilford County Schools System who are legal residents of North Carolina. Special consideration will be given to students attending North Carolina colleges and universities. Each year, the award will cover (up to a maximum of $10,000) tuition and fees, on-campus room and meals, and books and supplies. This scholarship is renewable.
Applicants must meet the following criteria to be eligible for the scholarship:
A commitment to the field of public education
Breadth of interests
Potential for success at the college level
A commitment to community service
Concern for others
Extracurricular involvement
Financial need will be considered, but is not a mandatory factor.
Kernodle Scholars will be required to serve for a minimum of three years following graduation as a full-time teacher in grades K-12 in North Carolina public schools, with a strong preference for service in Guilford County. Kernodle Scholars must:
-Maintain a minimum cumulative 3.0 grade point average while in college
-Continue in college as a full-time student and pursue studies leading to licensure at graduation to teach in North Carolina public schools
-Achieve a degree for employment as a teacher in grades K-12
-Meet the three-year teaching commitment, or the recipient will be required to repay all funds received from the John R. Kernodle, Jr. Scholarship Fund

Seniors: Reduced Requirement for Service Learning Award or Diploma
Posted by Shalena Sarver on 10/5/2020The following prorate is for students in the Class of 2021, Class of 2022, and Class of 2023.
Proration: The following proration will be followed when students return to school on January 20th.
Service-Learning Diploma
Students who have 192 hours submitted will obtain the Service-Learning Diploma.
- Students have 185 weeks (Freshman year to Service-Learning Senior deadline including summers) to earn the 250 hours towards the Service-Learning Diploma which equals an average of 1.35 hours per week.
- Students in high school during COVID-19 will have 142 weeks due to COVID-19 time lost. Based on the reduction, we are prorating the requirement by 58 hours equaling 192 hours. 250/185 = 1.35 142 x 1.35 = 192
Service-Learning Award
Students in High School during COVID-19 who have submitted 77 hours will obtain the Service-Learning Award.
- Based on the above logic, the service-learning award would be reduced from 100 hours to 77 hours. 100/185 = .54 142 x .54 = 77
