Mrs. Harrell
Stokesdale Elementary 2022-2023
Arrival/Dismissal
Students can arrive to school no earlier than 7:00am. Students will come directly to the classroom to unpack, use the restroom, go to the cafeteria to get breakfast if needed, and complete their morning work/select a morning stem bucket. School will dismiss each day at 2:10 pm.
Absences
If your child misses school for any reason, you will need to send an excuse note the day he/she returns to school.
Behavior
Each student has a "punch card" to reward good behavior. When they get 10 punches, they are rewarded with a trip to the treasure box and will begin a new card. We also have a "so sweet" class treat jar. When the whole class is spotted making good choices or doing the right thing, Mrs. Harrell will add a "sweet" to the jar. When the jar is filled up, the whole class gets a reward, of their choosing.
Breakfast:
Breakfast is served daily in the cafeteria from 7:20-7:35. Students may go to breakfast after coming to the classroom and turning in their homework folder. If your child will be going to breakfast, please be sure they arrive at 7:20 so they have ample time to eat and return to class to complete morning work. Breakfast stops being served at 7:35.

Conferences
Mandatory parent conferences will be held first marking period (October/November) and third marking period (March/April).
Time frames will be 10-15 minute blocks for each parent conference.
Field Trips
We will be taking 3 or 4 field trips this year. Most of the field trips will not require chaperones. However, our trip to the Lazy Five Ranch or the Zoo (the team hasn’t decided yet!) will require many chaperones. To be a chaperone you must complete a background check online. You can find the link for this on the Stokesdale Elementary School homepage.
Folders
Homework Folder: Your child will have a homework folder that they will bring home every day. This folder will have their homework, any important information, as well as their daily behavior log. I will label the inside pockets Leave Home and Bring Back. I will guide the students in placing their papers in their folders each day. Everything that is placed in the side that says “leave home”, please review and keep. Everything that is placed in the side “bring back”, please complete and return to school. Your child’s homework and behavior log will be on this side. Please check this folder each night and sign their behavior log.
Homework
Optional homework sheets will be sent home, from time to time. These are "at home" practice and do not need to be returned to school. Please be sure that you are reading to or with your child for at least 20 minutes, each night.
Lunch/Snack
Our lunch time is 11:35-12:00 in the old(left side) cafeteria. If you send money with your child, please put the money in a labeled envelope in their homework folder. You can also pay for your child’s lunch online at www.lunchprepay.com. If you are joining your child for lunch, please meet us in the cafeteria at 12:20, not in the classroom as this disrupts instruction.
Our snack time is in the morning due to our late lunch. Please send in a small healthy snack for your child to enjoy!
Water bottles are allowed at our desks throughout the day as long as they are not a distraction.
Newsletter
Our First Grade Newsletter will be sent home each week, via email, between Friday and Sunday. Events and reminders will be on this weekly newsletter. The first one will go out the second week of school. This newsletter is a great tool to keep you updated on what we are learning in our classroom as well as important dates and events.
Specials Schedule
Our daily specials are as follows: Monday: Music, Tuesday: PE, Wednesday: Art, Thursday: Computer Lab, Friday: Library. Please have your child wear sneakers for P.E every Tuesday!
Supplies
Most supplies become “community” supplies in our classroom. This means we all share them when needed. If your child has special supplies just for them, please label them or have your child keep it in their pencil pouch or desk. These include scissors, special pencils, pencil pouches, and pocket folders.
Snazzy Snacks
Our class will periodically enjoy time together making various snacks by learning, writing, and following simple recipes. This is a super way for children to learn sequencing skills, following directions, as well as making a snack independently. They will be writing each recipe on a recipe card and by the end of the year, they will have a book full of recipes they can make on their own!
Volunteers
I welcome volunteers to help in the classroom and with other duties such as making copies, helping students with reading skills, or providing any items we may need. If you are interested in volunteering, please let me know!
All About Mrs. Harrell
I am Mrs. Harrell, and I am your child’s teacher for the 2022-2023 school year. I would like to take the time to introduce myself. I am a graduate of The University of North Carolina at Wilmington with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a concentration in sociology. I have been teaching for ten years in grades K-2. I have been married for 12 years and have four sons.
The skills we practice daily in 1st grade are the building blocks for your child’s future success in school and in life. As your child’s teacher, it is my duty to mold my students into the scholars that I know that are capable of being. I am excited to work with both you and your child this year to ensure your child’s success, and am looking forward to everything in this school year has in store!
We are off to a GREAT start in first grade this year! I have enjoyed spending time with your child each day and look forward to what the rest of the school year has in store for us!
