The North Carolina Department of Labor is charged with promoting the health, safety and general well-being of more than 4 million workers in the state. This department serves the needs of the workplace through a variety of programs aimed at making the employees of North Carolina safe and healthy. With the adoption of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, Congress created the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). This department assures safe and healthy working conditions for working men and women by developing and enforcing OSHA standards and by providing training, outreach, education and assistance.
As an employer in North Carolina, GCS is doing its part to comply with the OSHA mandated training requirements for our 10,500+ employees. Simply completing the SafeSchools monthly OSHA trainings allows GCS to be compliant with the standards set in place by OSHA.
OSHA trainings are mandated for our District annually, based on a calendar year time-frame. Within the calendar year, all OSHA courses are broken up into monthly assignments. All paid employees (whether part-time, or full-time) must complete all required courses every calendar year. Regardless of the start date, the course completion expectations are the same. For example, if an employee is hired September 1st, he/she has to still complete all courses assigned January through December of that same calendar year, just like a person who started employment January 1st of that same calendar year.
The other piece of the mandate is that several of the courses are annual requirements. This means, for example, a course like Fire Extinguisher Safety will be offered every calendar year, year after year. So, if an employee completed Fire Extinguisher Safety in August of 2017, they still need to complete Fire Extinguisher Safety in whatever month it is assigned in 2018 as well. Where applicable, some courses are offered as exact repeats whereas some courses are offered as refreshers (or shortened versions) each year thereafter.
New hires should complete the SafeSchools courses that are nearest their hire date first, and forthcoming. Then, once they are current they may proceed with course completions that were assigned before their physical arrival to GCS.
SafeSchools courses that appear within the Mandatory Training category have been assigned to you based on your specific job title and/or location in the GCS District.
Don’t forget, quizzes are optional and do not equate course completion. One last notation, be sure to open SafeSchools courses using the Google Chrome (Internet browser). SafeSchools courses load/work best in Google Chrome, using a PC or Android-based devices.
